Case Study: Higher Hall Poultry Farm
Higher Hall Poultry Farm, Wrexham
280 Kw Rooftop Solar PV array
12 Months after completing a very successful 225 Kw Solar PV extension for this client at their site near Wrexham, Powys.
Solar PV Battery Systems were invited back again to design and install a DC coupled battery storage solution that would capture and distribute the abundance of surplus energy the extended system was exporting to the National grid.
With very limited DNO generation capacity left available at the site, (which is often the case for clients with sizeable existing systems already installed).
We designed a series of modular BYD HVM energy storage systems serving each poultry house, which during the evening time discharge their captured excess energy and keep the site running with what was the previously exported electricity.
Battery Systems
The Fronius inverters and BYD Battery Box systems were installed in a newly built battery room located centrally to the site, and in an area chosen by our client as being most suitable to not obstruct or interfere with the day to day operation of his site.
The bespoke built building supplied and installed by Solar PV Battery Systems maintains the batteries temperatures throughout the seasons, keeping them nice and cool in the summer months with plenty of ventilation and warm and snug in the winter months from the residual heat of the passively cooled Fronius Gen 24 inverters.
FIRE SAFETY
BYD HVM Battery Box are one of the safest batteries in the world thanks to their cobalt free LiFePO technology, and are one of the few products available in todays market that do not require built in fire suppression.
The additional Solar PV arrays required to feed each of the Fronius hybrid inverters with DC power to charge the batteries, was hosted on just one of the existing poultry houses blending in nicely with the existing modules.
We then installed a series of smart metering networks, used to control the charge and discharge of the cascaded battery sets for each building.
The added benefit of installing smart metering, is for clients to be able to observe at any time (day or night) what each building is consuming independently as opposed to just whole site consumption.
Another aerial view of the site after completion of the project, the battery storage building is located behind the silio’s of the 2nd building.
Smart meters were installed at each building to monitor consumption and control the BYD Battery Box sets.
The dashboard version of the Fronius SolarWeb platform is packed full of monitoring features and advanced energy saving options.
Battery Systems
The Fronius SolarWeb monitoring platform supplied as part of this project (and with all our energy storage systems) enables clients to view in real-time how their system is performing and when to switch on loads to utilise their self-generated stored power more efficiently.
Off peak ‘Time of use charging’ available through the Fronius App enables customers to fully charge their batteries at a low electricity rate, Particularly useful during the winter period of low generation months.
