What is ‘Whole home back Up’ and how does it work?

Introducing an emergency power supply (EPS) solution to your home is fast becoming normal practice when installing Solar PV Battery storage systems at homes or business premises.

The system works by switching over almost instantaneously when a power outage or loss of mains signal is detected at your property, power is restored almost immediately by a gateway (automatic transfer switch) or manual changeover switch.

The property is then seamlessly powered entirely by your home energy storage system.

Do I need to keep my batteries fully charged?

This will depend on the capacity of your home energy storage system and your electricity usage. Installing this type of system will generally require a larger battery capacity and reserve of stored power, ensuring you are able to draw off the batteries in the event of a power outage.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 has a battery capacity of 13.5 Kwhr and can be further expanded with up to three additional units 54 Kwhr, The Fronius BYD Battery-Box option 13.8 kwhr can be expanded up to 57 Kwhr.

Customers who are dependent on a continuous power supply, can easily apply a ‘minimum state of charge’ setting for their battery system through their Tesla or Fronius app which ensures a reserve of stored power is always available to them in the event of a power cut.

Tesla Powerwall ‘Storm watch’

Storm Watch mode from Tesla is a great feature available on their App and is only triggered during severe weather events that are more likely to damage power lines and cause power cuts. Storm Watch mode activates when the weather event has advanced in severity and the UK Met Office sends out an Amber or Red alert mentioning a risk of power cuts.

When Storm Watch is activated, you will receive a push notification, and Powerwall will charge to maximum capacity to automatically maximise your protection from power cuts. This remains active until the weather event ends, and your system will return to its normal behaviour afterwards. Even if Storm Watch hasn’t activated based on your local weather conditions, and you prefer additional energy security, you can set a higher Backup Reserve in advance of an anticipated power cut.

3.2 Kw Extension to existing FIT system (on higher rate tariff) 13.5 Kw Tesla Powerwall + Gateway

When William Tait approached Solar PV Battery Systems, he had already received differing advice from several other solar companies on how he could introduce an effective home battery storage system to his existing FIT (Feed in Tariff) system; and without jeopardising his higher rate generation payments.

His existing system installed back in 2012 was made up of 16 Sharp NU 185 modules and an SMA inverter located in his loft space.

Mr Tait explained “Originally we just wanted to future proof the property by introducing some battery storage and at the same time bring the inverter down to the garage, which would mean it would be far easier to maintain, and I could also keep an eye on it far more easily”

“After contacting several firms, the general recommendations given to us was to retain the existing SMA inverter in the loft and add an AC charger inverter with battery storage in the garage.

The main reason given by the other installers for adopting this method was to not alter or interfere with our existing Feed in Tariff System.

This caused me some concern as I would then have two devices to maintain and replace further down the line, and although it probably would have been an effective method to capture my surplus generation; I was not happy with the conversion efficiency of the AC charger option.

Furthermore, I had done some research online and discovered that you could in fact ‘boost’ an existing FIT system if the correct documental procedures were applied.
